With LaLiga coming back this weekend, Spanish football enters a new era for the league after the departures of Messi and Ramos to PSG. Despite those departures, there’s a lot of interesting things about this upcoming season for LaLiga and all Spanish football.
The Title Race
Atlético de Madrid are the clear favorites to win LaLiga title back to back, they have the same core of players from last season and made 23 new additions to the squad ( Rodrigo de Paul, Sergio Guerrero and Marcos Paulo). Those 3 additions will help “Los Colchoneros” this season big time. This is probably the first time in many years were Barcelona and Real Madrid are not the favorites to win La Liga.
Barcelona and their fans are probably having the worst summer transfer window of their lives. Losing the best player in history of the club has been a major blow to the team and the future of the team doesn’t look great due to the financial situation the club is right now. Despite the terrible situation the club is having right now, Barcelona should not be underestimated.
Real Madrid this summer transfer window lost Varane and Ramos, two key players the last couple of seasons for the club. Real Madrid’s only new signing was David Alaba and they are not looking to add new players unless Mbappe is available and that looks to not be the case until the next summer transfer window when he would come to Real Madrid for free. Vinicius and Rodrygo are to of the young players that Madrid has and will be asked to do a lot more this season under Ancelotti as the coach once again of the 13-times Champions League winners.
Sevilla: A New Contender
Last season, Sevilla were on the title race until the last games of the season. The team under the direction of Julen Lopetegui are major favorites to end the rule of the Big 3 of Spain on LaLiga. With Barcelona and Real Madrid losing key players, this could be Sevilla’s season to shock the world and Spanish football.
Sevilla has always been close to the title reason on past seasons, but this a golden opportunity for them and other teams with a shot to win LaLiga like Villareal. Sevilla last time they were Spanish champions was in the 1945-1946 season and that was the only time they won the biggest championship in Spanish football.
Clubs to Pay Attention to
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid tend to always have most of the attention, but there are several teams that fans should pay attention to and could surprise a lot of people.
Athletic Bilbao has improved so much since Marcelino took the coaching job in the middle of the last season and with him having the reigns of the team from the start, Athletic Bilbao could will be a club fighting for those European competition spots of the table. Real Sociedad, also from Euskadi like Athletic Bilbao, are a team worth paying attention to, with players like Illarramendi and David Silva (ex-Man City player) whoa re key for the club.
Another club to have a close eye to is the current Europa League champions Villareal. They were one of the most consistent teams from last season and playing some beautiful football. Villareal is more than ready for the challenge of playing domestic competitions and the Champions League this season.
