Monday Night Raw Recap (January 18, 2021)

Opening Segment and Randy Orton

Monday Night Raw opened up with a video package for Martin Luther King Jr. Afterwards, Randy Orton came out wearing a face mask saying he suffered 1st degree burns from Alexa Bliss throwing a fireball at him. He said he blamed Bray Wyatt/The Fiend for what happened stating his compassion was gone.

Charlotte Flair vs. Peyton Royce

Winner: Charlotte Flair

Before the match, Lacey Evans was interviewed by Charly Caruso about her relationship with Ric Flair. It seemed this interview may have distracted Charlotte Flair who was attacked by Peyton Royce before the match started. It seemed Peyton had the upper hand for a good portion of the match. Right when Charlotte was able to do a hanging neck breaker, Ric Flair and Lacey arrived. This momentary distraction allowed Peyton to do a big boot. Furious, Charlotte did some more good offense before putting Peyton in a Figure Eight. Peyton tapped and the match was done.

Xavier Woods vs. Mace

Winner: Mace

Before this match, Mustafa Ali was interviewed. He said he wanted to break Kofi Kingston’s spirit by hurting Xavier Woods. Mustafa felt a way about Kofi taking his opportunity two years ago. When Xavier came out, Mustafa was talking a lot of crap and Xavier hit him in the face. Xavier was pumped up throughout the match. Mustafa was even hit with a baseball slide into a the table. Mustafa told Mace to end the match. Mace did a leg lariat, followed by a firemen’s carry to win the match.

Shayna Baszler vs. Mandy Rose

Winner: Shayna Baszler

Before the match, Shayna Baszler said she would go through Nia Jax to win the Royal Rumble and anyone else that should in her way. While, Nia watched from commentary, Shayna went after Mandy Rose’s arm by stomping on her elbow. Even though, Mandy tried to come back, she was no match for Shana who kept going after the elbow before putting Mandy in the Kirifuda Clutch to win the match.

Afterwards, Dana Brooke who was at ringside, pushed Nia into the steel post. This caused an argument between Nia and Shayna outside of the ring. After Shayna got backstage she said she wanted another shot at getting the Women’s tag team championship titles.

AJ Styles vs. Ricochet (Royal Rumble Opportunity)

Winner: AJ Styles

Before the match, Adam Pearce told Ricochet he needed to beat AJ Styles to enter the Royal Rumble. Even though AJ Styles mocked Ricochet, Ricochet was on fire being aggressive in the first half of the match. When Ricochet tried to jump, Omos caught him and put him on the floor. AJ tried to do a Phenomenal Forearm, but Ricochet reversed it into a Recoil. However, AJ kicked out off the pin. Both men fought on the top rope, but after AJ knocked Ricochet down, he was able to do a Styles Clash to win the match.

The Miz and John Morrison (Dirt Sheet Segment)

This segment was hard to watch as The Miz and John Morrison opened up the Dirt Sheet segment. The first to come out was supposed to be Goldberg, but instead we got Gillberg instead. I haven’t seen him in years, so it made me smile, but even that wasn’t enough to save this segment. Not too long after a fake Drew McIntyre came out, but quickly The Miz said he would become the WWE Champion when he cashed in at the Royal Rumble.

Sometime after the segment, Drew McIntyre came on the titantron from his home gym. He said both The Miz and John were clowns. He said while he respected Goldberg, he would leave The Royal Rumble retaining the championship. He also said he would be at Monday Night Raw next week.

The Hurt Business vs. Lucha House Party and Matt Riddle

Winner: The Hurt Business

There seemed to be a lot of miscommunication during the match with The Hurt Business. Cedric Alexander seemed to be very cocky which angered his teammates. During this part of the match, Cedric almost got rolled up in a pin by Lince Dorado. Finally, Shelton Benjamin tagged in and did some great offense and then Bobby Lashley did the same. However, Shelton knocked Cedric out of the ring which caused more issues until MVP talked to him.

Matt Riddle was able to tag in and do a lot of damage despite Bobby stepping on his foot earlier in the night. He did a Final Flash knee and a Floating Bro. Matt then tagged in Gran Metalik, but he was put in a Hurt Lock to end the match. Afterwards, Matt kicked Bobby before leaving the ring.

Jeff Hardy vs. Jaxson Ryker

Winner: Jeff Hardy

Before the match, Elias told Jaxson Ryker to not screw up as he did on the previous Monday Night Raw. Jaxson got a few offense moves in but Jeff Hardy was able to do a Twist of Fate. Just as Jeff was preparing to do a Swanton Bomb, but Elias knocked him off the top tope. This caused Jaxson to be disqualified and Jeff to win the match.

Asuka Vs. Alexa Bliss

Winner: Alexa Bliss

Earlier, in the show Asuka was introduced to Alexa Bliss’s playground. It seemed Asuka who normally says nobody is ready for her, was uncertain and concerned about this side of Alexa. It didn’t work for me, but I guess for the storyline. During the match, Asuka had the upper hand for most of it showcasing her skill as a wrestler. However, the lights dimmed after Alexa slid out of the ring and she came back in with some offense making Asuka unable to use what she did prior to this. Asuka was able to escape a Mandible Claw. Asuka did more great strikes, but it didn’t phase Alexa. Alexa eventually did a Sister Abigail to win the match and Monday Night RAw.
