The Top Ten Sports Storylines to follow in 2021

2020 was a sports year, unlike any other. The COVID-19 pandemic put numerous sports leagues on hold, but now the NFL, College Football, College Basketball, and NBA are all back in action. What sports storylines should we most look forward to in 2021?

  1. Can the Gonzaga Bulldogs go undefeated?

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are off to an excellent start this season. Mark Few’s teams have beaten the previously 6th ranked Kansas Jayhawks, the previously 11th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers, and the previously 3rd ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. Gonzaga’s remaining opponents are significantly easier than the teams they’ve already played. This year’s Gonzaga team has a chance historically good.

  1. What does 2021 have in store for all the young NFL QBs

The NFL is full of quarterbacks with very bright futures. The past two MVP winners, Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, were both second-year quarterbacks. Not to mention that four rookie QBs this season, Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, and Jalen Hurts, have all shown flashes this season and could all become stars in 2021. Additionally, five quarterbacks in Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, Zach Wilson, and Kyle Trask all might be first-round selections in 2021. What does 2021 have in store for all of the league’s exciting young quarterbacks?

  1. When will sporting events have full crowds?

Sports sure are different without a full crowd of fans. The COVID-19 vaccine is already being distributed, which means this pandemic could eventually come to an end. Will sporting events have full crowds again at some point in 2021?

  1. What will March Madness in 2021 look like?

March Madness in 2021 will be even more exciting after the men’s basketball tournament got canceled in 2020. Unlike in previous years, the 2021 tournament is expected to be in one location. What will the tournament look like amidst the COVID-19 pandemic? Which team will take home the national title?

  1. Will the Lakers repeat as NBA champions?

The Los Angeles Lakers won their 17th NBA championship by defeating the Miami Heat in six games during the 2020 NBA Finals. With Lebron James and Anthony Davis still onboard and an excellent acquisition in Montrez Harrell, the Lakers should be considered the favorites to win the 2021 NBA championship. Will Lebron be able to capture his 5th title?

  1. What will happen in the college football playoff?

The Alabama Crimson Tide, the Clemson Tigers, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are the four teams that will compete for a national title. Last season, the Tigers and Buckeyes had a historic game in the college football playoff semi-finals. Will those two schools have another all-time classic game? It is also possible that Clemson and Alabama will end up meeting in the national title game for the fourth time in six years, and that would be an amazing game to look forward to.

  1. Will these future hall of fame NFC QBs be able to return to the Super Bowl?

Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, and Russell Wilson are all future members of the Hall of Fame and are on teams that consider themselves Super Bowl contenders. The last time Rodgers, Brees, or Wilson appeared in a Super Bowl was all the way back in 2015. That is very surprising given how successful those three and their teams have been over the past few seasons. Will one of those future halls of fame QBs have an overdue return to the Super Bowl?

  1. Will Kevin Durant be able to return as the same player?

Kevin Durant tore his right Achilles tendon during game five of the 2019 NBA finals and has not played in an NBA game since. Durant is one of the best players in NBA history, but returning from that gruesome injury at the age of 32 will not be easy. Will Durant return to being a superstar on his new team, the Brooklyn Nets?

  1. Does Tom Brady have another Super Bowl left in him?

Tom Brady has won six Super Bowls and is widely considered to be the greatest quarterback in NFL history. Will Brady be able to win another Super Bowl in his first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? It is unsure how much Brady has left in the tank at the age of 43. This season could be Brady’s best chance to win a Super Bowl playing for a team that isn’t the New England Patriots.

  1. Will the Chiefs be the NFL’s next dynasty?

The Kansas City Chiefs are the defending Super Bowl champions and currently have the best record in the entire league. The Chiefs have a chance to be the first team to win consecutive super bowls in over 15 seasons. The Patriots dynasty has seemingly come to an end now that Brady is no longer on the team. Patrick Mahomes is only 25 years of age, and Andy Reid has shown no signs of wanting to retire from coaching. The Chiefs might not only win another Super Bowl this February but could also win more in the future.
