Pancakes, Stakes, and Tony’s Takes: December 3rd Edition

Good morning fellow bettors!

I had to take a few days off from this column due to some mental health issues. Pro-Tip: Please do not ever consume an elephant trunk sized energy drink and a 44oz soda on 2.5 hours of sleep then cold turkey quit caffeine because you suffered a caffeine induced anxiety attack. You, like me, will realize you are making some incredibly stupid decisions. You’re welcome for the common sense tip, by the way.

College Basketball is in full swing and life is good. This is my first year betting NCAA Hoops, but I’m having an absolute blast. Here is what my card looks like recently:

  • Gonzaga -2.5 against West Virginia
  • Michigan -16.5 against ball State
  • Oklahoma State over Marquette
  • St Francis PA vs Virginia OVER 123.5
  • Virginia Tech vs Villanova OVER 137.5
  • UL Lafayette vs Baylor OVER 149
  • Baylor moneyline vs UL Lafayette
  • West Virginia moneyline vs Western Kentucky
  • Gonzaga moneyline vs Kasas
  • Saint Joseph vs Kansas OVER 160.5

  • Kansas -4.5 against Kentucky
  • Duke moneyline vs Michigan State
  • Wisconsin Green Bay vs Wisconsin UNDER 119.5
  • Hartford vs Villanova UNDER 139.5
  • North Carolina vs Stanford OVER 146.5
  • Washington vs Baylor OVER 148.5
  • Texas Tech vs Houston OVER 128
  • Liberty moneyline against TCU
  • Michigan State -24.5 against Notre Dame

Overall Record: 10-9

I’m not saying I’m the best bettor in the world, but I’m certainly pretty happy with some of these bets. Most of my aggressive bets expectedly failed, but I’m pretty happy with many of these. My goal is to give you guys an article about each day’s games as long as the season is going on.

So, lets get into tomorrow’s games!

Chicago State vs Eastern Illinois (EIU -24.5, 139)

Both teams enter this matchup 0-3. Chicago State averages an abysmal 47.7 points per game while Eastern Illinois averages 60 points per game. EIU played a very good game against Davidson on Tuesday losing 66-63 while Chicago State’s closest loss was by 23 points.

Each of these teams shoots under 40% heading into this matchup. The spread doesn’t feel like a comfortable number to bet on either way, but 139 points feels like a number that isn’t likely to be reached in this on. I’d avoid this game, but consider the OVER if you’re looking for another game to bet on tomorrow.

Bet Suggestion: UNDER 139 (-108)

Winthrop vs Arkansas Little Rock (WIN -1.5, 154.5)

This is an interesting mid-major matchup with both teams entering with winning records. We’ve seen Winthrop just one time this year in their victory last game 76-67. UALR has scored well in their games putting up 70 in each of their games. Interestingly, their only loss comes against the team Winthrop just lost to losing 77-70.

Each of these teams averages over 70 points per game giving us the large point total.

I’m a bit weary betting a point total that high even with offenses as potent as these. This should be an entertaining game to sweat out Winthrop covering the spread.

Betting Suggestion: Winthrop -1.5 (-112)

UMass Lowell vs NC State (NC State -15.5, 151.5)

There isn’t a lot to say about this one. UML has an impressive offense and put up a decent fight against a great Ohio State Squad losing 74-64, but NC State is just awesome on offense averaging a whopping 90.5 points per game so far recording 86 and 95 points in their two games this season.

NC State is handedly beating inferior opponents, too, and there isn’t much reason to think they won’t continue to do the same. UML’s Obadiah Noel could cause some issues as he’s scoring 24 points per game, but NC State should handle UML easily. This is a really big spread, but its cheap negative value at -110. The points seem like a lock in this one, too.

Bet Suggestion: NC State -15.5 (-110) OVER 151.5 (-110)

USC vs UCONN (UConn -1.5, 143.5)

We have a matchup here between two teams that should be no worse than bubble teams come March.

Each of these teams averages over 80 points per game, so we should see an absolutely quick game of baskeball with lots of scoring. UConn has hit the century mark already this year and USC has scored well in each of their three games this year. The point averages are impressive, but the field goal percentage and rebounding averages are even better.

Each team shoots over 50% from the floor, brings down over 40 rebounds per game, and average over 15 assists per game. UConn’s perimeter defense is phenomenal averaging 8 assists per game.

143.5 points seems pretty low for these teams based on the way their averages are trending.

I expect this game to be high scoring, but I’ve no confidence in picking a winner in this one. Bet the over, enjoy the game!

Betting Suggestion: OVER 143.5 (-110)

Arizona State vs California (ASU -7.5, 146.5)

Pac 12 basketball gets a late evening spot to showcase what should be a good year of play this season. Arizona State enters this game as the 25th ranked team in the nation, but are much better than their ranking. Their lone loss comes against a Villanova team that is very talented despite their upset loss they suffered this past weekend.

California is a bit more unclear. They suffered a loss to an Oregon State team that I don’t know much about and have won their last two games by double digits.

ASU’s offensive firepower is incredible averaging 89.3 points per game. Both of these teams have great perimeter defense averaging over 7 steals a game and each team shares the ball well averaging over 12 assists each.

ASU’s lone loss still had them put up 74 points. California put up 63 in their loss. Trends do not give me confidence in this over.

However, I do have confidence that ASU, a preseason top 20 team, should handle California. Freshman Josh Christopher has been impressive for the Sun Devils scoring 18.7 points per game on 57.9% shooting. Marcus Bagley has added 15.7 points per game and 5 rebounds per game from the forward position giving this team a lethal duo heading into the game.

Junior Matt Bradley for the Golden Bears could cause some issues for the Sun Devils. Bradley is a big guard at 6’4″ and 220 pounds averaging 19.3 points per game on 45% shooting. California has a veteran team with many upperclassmen which could spell an upset, but the Sun Devils are much more talented than the Golden Bears and despite failing their test against preseason top 5 teams Villanova, they should prove their preseason ranking in this one.

Betting Suggestion: ASU -7.5 (-110)

There are several other games on the schedule tomorrow, but I wanted to just touch on these. Arizona State vs California should be the top game on the schedule before we head into the weekend which features a massive matchup between the top two teams in the country, Gonzaga and Baylor.

Check back with us tomorrow for another edition of Pancakes, Stakes, and Tony’s Takes!
