2020-2021 College Basketball Early Betting Odds

We are just one week away from the College Basketball season getting underway! Unfortunately, COVID-19 ripped March Madness away from us this year, so College Hoops fans have been pining for the return of the season for months. For those of us that are fans of top contenders, we were left wonder “what if” as there was no champion crowned for the 2019-2020 season. The 2020-2021 season should be an interesting one with limited or no fans in the arenas and the NCAA Tournament confirmed to take place inside of a bubble this Spring.

The Top 10 preseason favorites for the NCAA Championship is littered with a host of perennial favorites and new faces. Baylor University, who held the longest streak at #1 last season before cooling off significantly and losing the Big 12 to Kansas, appears at #2. The Bears are returning many upper classmen from a team that looked destined for an Elite 8. We will find out a lot about these Bears early on as they are facing off with Gonzaga in the non-conference slate. Jared Butler and MaCio Teague return for the bears and each player was great for the bears. Butler average 16 points per game while Teague average 13.9 ppg himself. The Bears are great defenders ranking 7th nationally in points per game last year. The Bears key will be losing Freddie Gillespie and Tristan Clark during the offseason. The Bears are adding two top 100 recruits and UNLV transfer Jonathan Tcharmwa Tchatchoua to a veteran team. Jared Butler’s improvement is the key for this team. He shot 38% from 3 last year making 77 of them. If he continues to improve, the Bears will be a title favorite and Butler will be in a fight with Luka Garza for National Player of the Year.

Another surprising group of teams has to be Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. Typically, the preseason favorites are littered with your Villanova, Gonzaga, Kansas, Duke, etc, the typical Blue Blood schools, but this is going to be an unique season. The Hawkeyes of Iowa have a healthy mix of upper classmen returning including Senior Center Luka Garza who averaged 23.9 points per game last season. Garza was a 1st Team all American, the Big 10 player of the year, NCAA Center of the Year and was the runner up for the National Player of the year. Garza is sensational and makes the Hawkeyes a contender for the title with really nice odds. If you’re taking a future bet, the Hawkeyes seem like a nice bet to consider at +800.

The Fighting Illini sport two top 50 nationally recruited guards in Adam miller and Andre Curbelo. The backcourt duo will joined by the starters from last year which obviously makes them a top team nationally and a contenders for the national title. The bench depth will be questionable for the Illini as they had some departure that will hurt their depth off the bench, but with the starters returning and two top recruits, watch out for this team with nice odds at +1300.

The obvious favorite here is Gonzaga as they were first in the nation in scoring last season and fourth in the nation in scoring defense last year. The Bulldogs are bringing in top 10 recruit Jalen Suggs and a pair of top 75 recruits in Julian Strawther and Domnick Harris. While the Bulldogs lost a bunch of players last year, they return several key players from last year. Gonzaga will hover around the favorites all year and have a combination of experience from a title favorite last year and newcomers that bring new wrinkles to a great core of players. Another team tied at +800 that I like is this Gonzaga team.

Villanova is the favorite according to DraftKings Sportsbook, but this is a team I’m unsure of. While they are getting Tulane transfer Caleb Daniels who average 16.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game, they lost Saddiq Bey who averaged 16.1 points per game from the forward position. Defensively, the Wildcats were awesome coming in third in the nation in scoring defense, but were just 115th nationally scoring. Villanova has been a top 10 team for years now, so it makes sense they’d be in these top 10 odds, but I’m not sure I like putting money on them more than any of the others.

Stay away from the Kansas University Jayhawks. The Jayhawks are facing potential consequences from a recruiting scandal that broke last year. While it is feasible they could get be left un-phased by this, we have no idea what the disciplinary action will be from the NCAA.

These odds will be updated weekly throughout the season and we’ll have a further breakdown of each of the top 25 teams soon! For now, lets move on to some other bets available on the DraftKings Sportsbook

Bet Suggestion(s): Baylor +800, Iowa +800, Gonzaga +800 or Illinois +1300

Avoid: Kansas +1100

To Make Final Four

  • Villanova +100
  • Baylor +125
  • Gonzaga +125
  • Iowa +125
  • Kentucky +150
  • Virginia +150
  • Kansas +200
  • Wisconsin +225
  • Duke +250
  • Illinois +250

The only advice I’d give here is to place your bets with teams you think can win the title. This is a tough bet, obviously, because we have no idea about matchups or tournament brackets until March. Unless you’re set on betting Final Four, I’d probably just avoid this prop.

Other Team Props to Consider

Duke to Win Conference +225

Illinois to Win Conference +355

Baylor to Win Conference +165

John R. Wooden Award

  • Luka Garza +400
  • Ayo Dosonmu +500
  • Jared Butler +600
  • Marcus Garett +1000
  • Corey Kispert +1000
  • Remy Martin +1000
  • Cade Cunningham +1500
  • Joe Ayaji +2000
  • Marcus Zegarowski +2000
  • Kihei Clark +3000

The obvious favorite here is Luka Garza. As a Center, he average 23.9 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. If his averages stay the same and the Hawkeyes are in contention for a Big 10 title, its going to be hard for anyone else to beat him. The homer in me likes Jared Butler at +600 if the Bears can knockoff the Kansas Jayhawks from Big 12 title dominance, but the safest bet here is Luka Garza while the odds are this good.

Bet Suggestion: Luka Garza +400
