MMA Round Up November 13th
Conor vs Dustin all about confirmed for January 23rd, 2021
Guess whose back? The Notorious Conor McGregor after his fourth retirement from the sport is back to take on the number 2 ranked lightweight in the world Dustin Poirier. This is going to be a rematch from their UFC 178 bout. Though this time, both men are completely different and this is definitely a better challenge for McGregor than Cowboy Cerrone.
So, how come we’re waiting until January? Well at first Conor wanted to fight again in 2020. Though he and Dana were feuding and had a public dispute. When you make Dana mad he isn’t a forgiving man. And despite the new two ESPN + PPVs being weak and could clearly host McGregor as the main event Dana outright refused and said that Conor couldn’t jump in.
My thoughts? I think Dana knows with no crowd Conor fights will actually lose him money rather than earn him money. A Conor McGregor gate is hard to say no to. He makes a lot of money based on the entry ticket alone. PPV buys won’t be enough and I think Dana is seeing 2021 as an opportunity for him to get fans to watch McGregor fight.
Though whatever the case is, at least the Notorious One will be making a return. This fight will most likely be taking place on the famed “Fight Island”. Unless Conor decides to change his training location to the states. This could be subject to change as COVID-19 is still spreading huge with America reaching record cases. This could prevent travel. Dana White is waiting to see what happens next though Dustin signed and Conor most likely will sign later but this fight will be happening this year.
Khamzat vs Edwards set
Leon Edwards has had a rough 2020. Edwards despite being a great fighter is more known for getting that famous three piece and a soda from Jorge Masvidal. He rebounded and dominated former Lightweight champ Rafael Dos Anjos but other than that Edwards has been quiet and yet would be clamoring for a title shot.
Edwards felt he was one fight away and was pining to earn the number one contender status against Tyron Woodley. Due to the pandemic, the March bout was cancelled and Edwards didn’t want to change the booking. Edwards was clamoring for a fight saying he will fight anyone and that he was “ready”
Well, it turns out Edwards wasn’t really ready. When offered to face the Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman Edward declined. Granted it was short notice, I understand if you want to be at your best when facing Usman. Then it got more tricky. When Colby Covington and Woodley wasn’t a sure thing, Edwards was asked to take on Woodley. He declined.
I mentioned before that if Uncle Dana is frustrated with you, it is hard for you to actually get what you want. Dana White is happy with one fighter and that is quite possibly the MVP of 2020 Khamzat Chimaev. Khamzat is willing to fight anyone and every at Welterweight and Middleweight. The man has been a surging star for the UFC. In fact, everyone besides Neal Magny is refusing to fight Khamzat, including Edwards.
Edwards said he refused because Khamzat hasn’t done anything and he was looking for a ranked opponent. It is kind of hard to believe that when finally Edwards declined to fight Stephen Wonderboy Thompson.
Leon Edwards, who is looking to become a world champion, has done all of this in 2020:
- Declined to fight the former champ Tyron Woodley ranked 3 at the time
- Declined to fight the champ himself Kamaru Usman
- Declined to fight Colby Covington who is currently ranked number 1
- Declined to fight Stephen Thompson who is currently ranked number 5
- Declined to fight Geoff Neal who is currently ranked 10th
Edwards was stripped of his ranking and in return Edwards accepted the bout with Khamzat Chiamev. A risky fight but worth the reward if Edwards is able to defeat the Khamzat train.
Paul Felder lives up to his dragon nickname
Islam Makhachev was left without an opponent UFC 254 when Rafael Dos Anjos had to pull out due to contracting COVID-19 the fight was rebooked for this Saturday. Though Islam suffered an injury and everyone who misses Khaib will just have to wait to watch his protégé Islam fight again. Though on five day’s notice Paul Felder decided to step up and fight the former Lightweight king.
Paul Felder is a fan-friendly fighter. He puts on exciting fights and after a razor-close decision loss to Dan Hooker, Felder was contemplating if he would fight again. After a well deserved break, Felder gathered some dragon energy and after eating only oatmeal on Monday decided to cut weight. Felder weighed in today at 155.57. Felder is truly a Dragon and his fight with Rafael Dos Anjos is on.
The fight with Rafael Dos Anjos will take place tomorrow on ESPN+ surely a free card that is worth checking out especially if you enjoy two fighters who like to entertain the fans.
That is it for this weeks MMA Round up. Tune in next Friday for an all new Round-Up
