Monday Night Raw Recap: October 19, 2020

The Hurt Business vs. Retribution

Winner: The Hurt Business

The season premiere of Monday Night Raw started off with a new theme song called “The Search” by NF. After the song finished we see Alexa Bliss on the ring telling the WWE Universe to “Let Him In” referring to Bray Wyatt aka The Fiend. Bray made his way down to the ring and once inside, he held Alexa’s hand.

Right after Retribution led by Mustafa Ali came to the ring, but by that time both Alexa and Bray was gone. The Hurt Business made their way down and a brawl started. The Hurt Business was able to clear the ring before the commercial break.

Once back from break, Bobby Lashley started the match taking out T-Bar with a Flatliner. Cedric Alexander got to tag in and do some offense, before a distraction from Retribution allowed Ali to get the upper hand for a bit. During this time The Fiend appeared on the titantron before another commercial break. The Hurt Business was able to keep Mace from that point on. Once T-Bar got back into the ting, Lashley used his Hurt Lock and got the win.

Moments after the match ended, The Fiend came back and beat up Slapjack, Mace and T-Bar. Ali was spared. The Fiend was left standing in the ring and Alexa now on the titantron saying “Let Me In”!

AJ Styles vs. Matt Riddle

Winner: AJ Styles

AJ Styles came to ring and cut a promo with his new bodyguard Jordan Omogbehin. Soon after Matt Riddle came out to start their match. After a few tries the referee was able to get Jordan out of the ring.

Matt Riddle dominated for the first half of the match, but after Jordan showed up next to him, it turn the tide to AJ’s side. There was some good back and forth between the two. A one pint Matt was able to do a Fisherman Buster into a cradle for two. Once again Matt was outside of the ring and when it seemed that Jordan was going to hit Matt, Matt rolled back in the ring. However, this distraction allowed AJ to do the Styles Clash and get the win.

Asuka vs. Lana (WWE Raw Women’s Championship Match)

Winner: Asuka

Lana made her way to the ring for her title match against Asuka as she was the winner from last week’s Dual-Brand Women’s Battle Royal. Lana started off pretty good, but Asuka attempted to do an Asuka lock before Lana rolled to the ropes for a rope break. Surprisingly this was the best I’ve seen Lana in a long time, as she got quite a few hits in and reverses during the match. However, Auska being Asuka got her in the Asuka lock and Lana did tap.

Right after the match, Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler came to the ring and attacked Asuka. Then once again Nia Jax delivered a Samoan Drop through the announce table for the 5th time in a row. Asuka was able to get some offense before retreating from the ring.

Fatal 4-Way Women’s Tag Team Match

Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler, The Riott Squad, Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke & Peyton Royce and Lacey Evans

Winner: Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler

Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler issued a challenge to the WWE’s women’s locker room to assert their dominance. Out came Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke, The Riott Squad and Lacey Evans and Peyton Royce. Though I would think it is dumb to break up The IIconics only to have Peyton team up with Lacey Evans.

There was a small brawl which showed how well the Riott Squad works as a team. Throughout the match, every wrestler was able to show off some of their moves. At some point it seemed that the Riott Squad would get the win, but Shayna stopped that with the Kirifuda Clutch. Nia Jax tagged herself back in and did a Samoan Drop to Lacey winning the match.

Elias Returns!

Elias made his return to WWE and instead of him taking to the ring, he gave the WWE Universe, a concert. He performed a song called “Amen” from his new album, Universal Truth which is supposed to release on October 26th.

The performance itself was pretty good, and I found myself liking the song much more than I thought I would. At the end, Elias said he was going to do an encore, and as he was about to start playing again, a mystery dude started to play. The mystery dude turned out to be Jeff Hardy. This restarted the feud between the two that started earlier in the year when it was said Jeff Hardy ran Elias over with his car a reference to the legal issues Jeff has been having.

Kofi Kingston vs. Sheamus

Winner: Kofi Kingston

Kofi Kingston made his way to the ring with Xavier Woods. There were in the ring doing a promo when Sheamus interrupted. This turned into a match between Kofi and Sheamus.

For a good chunk of the match, Sheamus had the upper hand pounding Kofi all over the ring. Sometime during the match the camera showed Big E watching from home in the Thunderdome. This seemed to be what Kofi needed to get the fight back into him. He did a Boom Drop and almost got the pin fall.

Sheamus gave an Alabama slam and once again it seemed Kofi would lose the match. However, Kofi did a Russian leg sweep. Kofi got the win with a Trouble in Paradise.

Tucker and ‘El Gran Gordo’ vs. the Miz and John Morrison

Winner: Tucker and “El Gran Gordo”

The Miz and John Morrison made their way to the ring waiting for their match with Tucker and his new tag team partner. Tucker introduced to the WWE Universe to “El Gran Gordo,” one of the most famous luchadors in the world.

The Miz as usual cut a great promo about Otis who was “El Gran Gordo”. He called Otis a loser and an underdog. He also said he will win the court case and get the Money in the Bank suitcase and bring prestige back to it. Tucker and El Gran Gordo ran to the ring clearing the ring out before the break.

After the break it seemed that Tucker was getting the worst of it as The Miz and John Morrison worked on him throughout the match. Finally, El Gran Gordo tagged in. During the match R-Truth, Akira Tozawa, Drew Gulak and The Lucha House Party interrupted the match. This distraction allowed for El Gran Gordo to do the caterpillar and a Vader Bomb to win the match.

The Firefly Fun House Returns to Monday Night Raw.

About a year after Seth Rollins burned down the Firefly Fun House, The House made its return to Monday Night Raw with a new firefly character which as we know is Alexa Bliss.

Keith Lee vs. Braun Strowman

Winner: Braun Strowman

Before the match, they recapped the last match these two had together. This match wasn’t long as both men did a lot of heavy striking. As I’m not particularly sure of the purpose to this feud, the match ended with Braun used a low blow to win. Right after Keith gave Braun a low blow and some words was exchanged.

Randy Orton Promo

Earlier in the show Drew McIntyre cut a promo with Charly Caruso backstage. He also made mention of Randy’s interview or promo later in the show.

Randy Orton came out and sat in the ring with the steel cage put down as to get into the right mindset before Hell in a Cell. Randy mentioned The Undertaker and others he have faced in Hell in a Cell.

Drew came out and interrupted Randy using a pair of bolt cutters to get into the steel cage. You can see a standoff between the two before the show ended.
